DIRECTOR, STRUCTURAL CHEMISTRY (CRYSTALLOGRAPHY)
for a major biopharmaceutical company in the San Francisco, CA
area. As a member of the structural chemistry group will be responsible for
managing the crystallography group in support of small molecule drug discovery
efforts in the area of anti-infective therapeutics. Provides crystallization
and structure determination of small molecules. Provides advice on crystallization,
data collection, structure solution and hands-on crystallographic instruction.
Will screen novel targets for crystallization and optimizes hits to prepare
diffraction quality crystals and prepares crystals of target-inhibitor complexes.
Handles projects collaboratively and plans and coordinates all facets of screening,
optimization of hits to prepare diffraction quality crystals. Interacts with
project teams to include computational, medicinal, protein chemists and biologists
in order to establish crystallography needs; determining crystal structure characterization
and quality of samples. Provides leadership and direction to Ph.D. level scientists.
Requires Ph.D in Protein Crystallography with a minimum of seven
years years related experience with several years of management experience.
Must understand all aspects of protein ligand crystal growth and structure determination
and refinement. Must have excellent technical writing skills; and effective
communication and presentation skills; management, organizational and motivational
skills. Must have the ability to project a passion and a vision for the crystallography
group in meeting the needs of the company’s discovery research efforts.

Senior Research Scientist (Biophysical Chemistry)
for a leading biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery,
development and commercialization of anti-infective therapeutics; located
in the San Francisco, CA area. As a key member of the Protein Chemistry group
will be responsible for the development and implementation of methods to characterize
the interactions of organic ligands with protein targets to support the development
of drug screening assays, Crystallography, High Throughput Screening (HTS)
and rational drug design. Works extensively with members of Structural, Computational
and Medicinal Chemistry as well as Biologists in order to evaluate the interactions
of small molecules with protein targets; providing appropriate scientific
data based on findings. Interprets scientific data to determines its impact
on drug design and to better understand the structure and function of biological
and chemical systems. Evaluates and recommends new biophysical instrumentation
to be used within the group. Will initially supervise one Ph.D. level biophysical
chemist..
Requires Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry or Protein Chemistry
and 4 + years of related industry experience. Must have demonstrated expertise
in the biophysical and structural characterization of proteins; and experience
in using biophysical instrumentation to study the interaction of organic ligands
with protein targets. . Must have a working knowledge of Mass Spectrometry,
Analytical Centrifugation, Micro-Calorimetry, Surface Plasmon Resonance and
Binding Kinetics. Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; effective verbal
and written communication skills; leadership and project management skills.
