PSC 3110 Extra Credit Assignment (15 total points possible)

Listed below are a series of topics for extra credit papers. To obtain 15 points of extra credit for PSC 3110, choose one of the topics listed below, and prepare a 4-5 page paper (1.5 line spacing) on the subject described. Be sure to focus on and amplify the biochemical background pertaining to each topic.

Biochem Extra Credit Topics
Topic 1: The Use of Small Interefering RNA (RNAi) as Drug Therapy
Topic 2: Targeting the Vitamin A Receptor as an Antitumor Strategy
Topic 3: Enzymatic Methylation/Demethylation and the Epigenetic Control of Gene Expression

Be sure you come in and talk to me before starting your paper. In some cases, you would be better off concentrating on getting a higher exam grade than investing time in an extra credit paper. I will not accept an extra credit paper from anyone who has not spoken to me first.

The rules:

Each paper must be an individual effort!!!
Be sure to include a brief background section that covers the underlying biochemical system involved.
Plaigarism is a serious offense, and will not be tolerated. Do not use text word for word from your reference sources without using quotation marks. Make sure all facts are properly referenced.
References should appear in the Journal of Organic Chemistry style: Woster, P.M. and Gibbs, R.A. Our research and how we did it. J. Org. Chem. 2009, 63, 1-10.
Papers must be typewritten (except for structures). All papers are due by 9:00 am on Monday, December 14th, 2009.

Helpful reference sources are: Goodman & Gilman's "The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" and Wilson and Gisvold's "Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry", which can both be found in the LRC. You should begin with a MEDLINE search to find lead references for the topic you have chosen. If you add the word "review" to your search term, Medline will find review articles on the subject you are searching. Good luck!
